The Kempa trick
His legacy. The Kempa trick.
The Kempa trick is a combination throw, which became known due to the resulting spectacular and surprising goals. In this move, the thrower catches the passed ball during the jump, and finishes the shot for the goal whilst still in the air - ideally with success. The Kempa-trick became official in 1954, when it was presented to the public during an unofficial international match against Sweden in the Black Forest Hall in Karlsruhe for the first time.
I am still delighted to this day, when I tell the tale of how the trick was created. We have always tried lots of things during training sessions at Frisch Auf Göppingen. This, that or the other. Because training should also be fun. And during such fun exercises I invented the trick."
Bernhard Kempa (From Bernhard Kempas book "Ball ist Trumpf")
